The D.C. Council has approved a 5-year, $38 million contract extension for the partnership that runs the District of Columbia lottery.
Effective Thursday, the D.C. Lottery is now paying out winning lottery tickets. The lottery temporarily halted paying out winning tickets during the government shutdown.
Lottery sales had been slumping in the last few years, in part because of increased competition from Maryland and Virginia. Meanwhile, a federal grand jury is investigating the circumstances surrounding the District's lottery contract.
