Today's Forecast Updated Wednesday at 5:04 AM
Rain transitions to snow from west to east throughout the day...mainly wet roadways, except higher elevations west.
- Rain to Snow, 0 to 2” Metro 3-6” Higher Elevations West
- Highs: Mid 40s to Mid 30s
- Precipitation: 100%
- Rain/Snow Ends, Partly Cloudy, Watch for Slick Spots
- Lows: 28°-34°
- Wind: NW 5 mph
- Partly Sunny, Cold, Brief Passing Rain/Snow Shower
- Highs: Low 40s
- Wind: NW 10 mph
A low pressure center developing off the Carolina Coast is heading northeastward, spreading a chilly rain. We expect rain to continue through the morning, some heavy at times, in the metro area and points southeastward. With a lack of cold air in place, the storm will have to generate its own cold air for snow. The greatest impact from snow, however, will be felt in our far northern and western suburbs and in the higher elevations like the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge where the rain will change to snow during the morning and continue heavy at times through the day with four to six inches possible.
- ANTICIPATED SNOWFALLL
We expect the rain to change to snow farther south and east in the close-in suburbs and the District during the midday and afternoon hours, possibly bringing up to an inch, mainly to grassy surfaces. Meanwhile, our suburbs east of I-95 will have the mildest conditions and will, therefore, see rain for much of the event before briefly ending as a period of wet snow with little to no accumulation expected. Regardless, there will be messy travel conditions throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast so travelers should use extreme caution and pack plenty of patience.
Behind the storm, cold air will settle in for Thanksgiving with highs only in the lower 40s. A weather disturbance sliding through Virginia will keep considerable cloud cover around Thanksgiving with the chance of a few rain/snow showers... but nothing serious. Friday will bring more sunshine but continued cold weather for shoppers with highs only near 40.
Have a great day!
