As if Mother Nature was tipping her hand at what's to come, yesterday's 39 degree reading on the last full day of fall was the second coldest of the month. Temperatures will be marginally higher today, but on this day of the winter solstice - the shortest day of the year with a mere 9 hours and 26 minutes of daylight - the extremely low angle of the sun makes any warmth tough to come by. Still, the all time record high for this date, a balmy 72, was set just one year ago today. And by Wednesday of this week, a warm front is expected to push the thermometer into the 60s. So warm hopes spring eternal even at this lowest point in the astronomical year! Overcast skies are expected to brighten today as high pressure continues to influence our weather. Look for highs in the low 40s with calm winds. A low pressure system will begin making its way up the coast tomorrow, likely bringing rain to the DC area by afternoon. Some sleet and freezing rain are possible in areas to the north and west. Showers could occur again Tuesday and are a near certainly on Wednesday as a warm front drives temperatures into the lower 60s. In the wake of what could be some significant rain, a cold front will sweep through on Christmas Eve bringing mostly sunny, drier, but windy conditions on Christmas Day. Look for highs around 50 on both Thursday and Friday. Enjoy your holiday!
