A complex winter storm will impact the region. There are a few components at work here: first, low pressure is marching eastward, spreading light rain into the area. As colder air arrives from a strong high pressure cell to our north, the rain will turn to snow in our far northwestern suburbs- Frederick, Martinsburg, and Winchester later this morning. However, plain rain in DC and our southeastern suburbs so no major impacts are expected for the morning commute. The cold air will continue to pour southward tomorrow as the first storm merges with a coastal low pressure center. This will allow the rain to turn to snow in the DC metro area by the afternoon in our southeastern suburbs. Road conditions will deteriorate as temperatures fall throughout the day, causing problems for the evening commute area-wide. As the coastal storm intensifies and heads northeastward snowfall continues, especially north and east. Total snowfall potential through Tuesday will be a trace to 2 inches in the DC metro area with two to five inches in the far northwestern, northern and northwestern suburbs including Anne-Arundel and Baltimore. For most of us, Tuesday looks gusty and cold with occasional snow showers. High pressure will slide closer to our area Wednesday, setting the stage for sunshine and cold temperatures with a bit of a breeze- just not as gusty as Tuesday. Our next disturbance will arrive from the Midwest Thursday, bringing a light rain and snow mix. Travel safely and be sure to tune in for updates from the Stormwatch 7 Weather Center.
