After January ended with a week of exceptionally cold temperatures, February picks up the baton today with a chilly, wet, and wintry start. A significant storm system moving through the Midwest and spreading snow and a wintry mix will pass to our north this afternoon and tonight. And while a southerly flow and temperatures above freezing will keep the DC metro area with mostly rain, some snow and sleet could mix in at the outset. An icy glaze and thus problematic travel are more likely to the north and west of the city where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 PM today until 8 AM Monday. A mix of snow and sleet could lay down a light coating while an inch or more could accumulate in the far western counties and in northern Maryland near the Mason Dixon Line. For DC, any wintry mix is expected to changeover to all rain in the overnight hours. Monday will be cloudy and rainy as the storm system exits. Look for falling temperatures throughout the day - after a high near 50 - and for very gusty winds up to 40 mph. Temperatures will plummet to the teens tomorrow night. Yet another colder than normal week awaits but it will end, encouragingly, with slightly moderating numbers. No winter thaw perhaps, but a small step out of the ice box! Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday.
